 Steve Cram became the University of Sunderland's Chancellor in 2008.
Steve Cram is a former Olympic gold medallist and one of the world's greatest athletes. He set world records in the 1500 metres 2000 metres and the mile; he was the first man to run 1500 metres in under three minutes and 30 seconds; he won the 1500 metres gold medal at the 1983 World Championships and also the 1500 metres silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games.
Steve is now the BBC's chief athletics commentator a Guardian sports writer and is Chairman of the English Institute for Sport. 
Steve received his sports studies degree at the University of Sunderland in 1983. Three years later he was back at the University to receive an Honorary Fellowship for his outstanding contribution to sport and in 1994 he became Honorary President of the Alumni Association. 
"I'm delighted and honoured to have been asked to accept the post of Chancellor of the University of Sunderland" said Steve. "I'm passionate about the North-East Sunderland and education and this will give me a wonderful opportunity to combine all three."
