(The University of New South Wales)的一个科学家小组在太阳能电池效率领域保持着世界纪录,并且新南威尔士大学和全世界的太阳能电池制造厂商保持着密切的合作关系,以减少产生每瓦特光能的成本,这其中包括施正荣先生的中国尚德太阳能电力集团。
AUSTRALIA TO TRAIN CHINESE SOLAR ENGINEERS – SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE
The Australian Government will sponsor Chinese engineers to study with world class solar power experts at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, joining China’s Suntech Power Holdings in building a new generation of Asian solar engineers.
A team of UNSW scientists holds the world record in solar cell efficiency and the university is working closely with solar cell manufacturers worldwide, including Dr Zhengrong Shi’s Suntech, to reduce the cost per watt of solar generated power.
The Australian Government has awarded UNSW $5.2 million to train next-generation solar energy engineers from China, Korea and India. The sponsorship package is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP), of which China is a member.
Under the scheme, the UNSW's School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering will train 145 overseas students between 2008-11. The school will offer five fully supported PhD places and 80 MEngSc part-sponsored places, 40 in 2008 and 40 in 2009. Additionally, 20 fully funded undergraduate places will be available each year for three years from a selected group of Chinese universities, including Nankai University, Tianjin.
The Australian Government sponsorships further expands opportunities for Chinese students in the rapidly expanding solar sector. In June, Suntech’s chief executive and UNSW graduate, Dr Shi, announced Suntech will sponsor up to 30 Chinese students and employees to study a Master program in photovoltaics at UNSW, also from 2008. The university offers the world’s first photovoltaic and solar energy engineering degree program.
Globally, the solar power sector is growing at about 40 per cent a year, constrained only by the limited supplies of purified silicon for solar cells. World manufacturing leaders include Germany, Japan and China. The world record efficiency of 24.7 per cent achieved by UNSW scientists for conventional solar cells, plus incremental reductions in the amount of silicon required in manufacturing, is enhancing solar energy’s appeal as an emissions free power source.
“The solar industry in China has a big role to play in further strengthening exports in this fast growing sector as well as in generating clean power for the Chinese domestic market, especially for villages without access to the electricity grid, ” said Dr Richard Corkish, Head, UNSW School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering.
“We hope Chinese engineers wanting to participate in the booming photovoltaic sector will take advantage of this opportunity to study with world leaders in the field.”
The APP brings together Australia, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United States to address the challenges of climate change, energy security and air pollution in a way that encourages economic development and reduces poverty. These Asia-Pacific countries represent around half the world’s emissions, energy use, GDP and population.
