      History
It is accurate to say that the history of Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory closely mirrors the history of the city of San Francisco. Founded in 1852 by the Daughters of Charity (Vincentian Catholic tradition) immediately following the California Gold Rush Sacred Heart High School was one of the first schools in San Francisco and an all-girls school. By 1868 San Francisco had already become one of the largest cities in the United States and the school that would later be known as Cathedral High School was founded as an all-boys school by the Christian Brothers (Lasallian Catholic tradition). In 1987 the two great schools combined and Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory was formed creating one of the pre-eminent Catholic schools in downtown San Francisco.
