朴次茅斯大学）由1869年建立的朴次茅斯戈斯波特文理学院发展而来，于1900年开始颁发学士学位。自从1992年改为综合性大学至今，它已成为英国规模较大的大学之一，拥有学生20,000名左右。
设施
主图书馆（Frewen图书馆）在学期期间的开放时间为上午8点至午夜12点，藏书60多万册、期刊17000份、大量电子书籍和250多台联网的计算机。

新建且获奖的学生会大楼内有商店、快餐店、运动吧、咖啡店、食堂和工作推介所，也是100多个俱乐部和社团的活动中心。
学校还设有一系列完整的体育运动设施，包括两个橄榄球场、四个足球场、一个完全由泛光照明的标准尺寸合成草坪（STP）、一个理疗室和多个健身房及体育馆。
