“FOOD GET MAN'S HEART THROUGH STOMACH”。
In China, we say the most delicious food is “jiaozi” which is used to welcome the long-lost relatives. While, “lobster” is the so-called “food in the heaven” in Australia. Unbelievably, I have no chance to eat. Only when I was back home, such food had been put on table. They served it in cold-dishes, it tasted good. But not as good as i think.
Food is prohibited to carry into Australia according to the Customs Regulation. I almost felt starving when I landed there. After I was taken by the shuttle bus to the temporary accommodation, it was the premise-owner who saved me out of such embarrassment. I went to bed, had a though sleep. And then took a bath, clothes on. Stepping out of that youngster’s union, I headed to the closest market named Coles Meyer, nearby my campus. The difference is that the number seemed much cheaper than that in China. Amount I had to pay in Australia currency will be multiplied four times by RMB. That is to say, same amount I can got three more in China. Anyway, the only food I can get are canned food of pork and beef. Together with some slice of bread, I made myself some sandwich in the kitchen. That is the first night in Australia.
It is said that “food get man’s heart through stomach”. Standing in my position, that is interpreted in the ways I used to make friends. Not for advertisement of my cooking skills, but I am hunger for friendship just as food to my health. We introduce new friends into the group by a party. To solve the problems between the landlady and I, food is also supposed to be a sort of solution, such as meditation. To be honest, the problem is I can not manage a “cock tail” parties by my imagination.
When I lived with Indonesian girls, tomato sauce was one of the choice as flavor. A pack of beef slice usually cost about au$5, boiled it and then add tomato sauce at the point that meet turned dark brown. Full pot of meet will be stored in the frigerator as breakfast. Life in Sydney become more leisure, sometime the landlady would like to take spare time talking with me and share her cooked dishes. If the friends of their family come for a visit, some typical Chinese food such as “jiao zi” or “guo tie” could be seen. Another landlady who has a backyard garden, told me that vegetable like “patato or onion” are just more precious during time of World War II in the concentration camp. As such topic is so obsolete from me, I just held some talk with others in that house about cooking. They seemed had more close idea as I has.
While, most of party time, my friends and I will take turn to act as the hostess. Staying with my friends from Guangdong, I learned how to boil soup and use some Chinese Herb of medical ingredients to keep fit. Fruit salad is another cold dish I learned from my friend from H.K.. Later on, those dishes have been saved into my own menu. It is the favor which remind me of those days staying with friends in Australia.
The first invitation I got was to South Yarra, the flat shared by my friend with Indonesian. She was so sweat, but I felt something being tied up into a certain kind of role. I did not understand that quite clearly, either she or the surroundings made me feel that I was not the right person to be part of that. That sounds really strange. Even though I almost believe that i had been accepted, everything should be good enough. More or less, others should have the same feelings as I had, because of the temporary status. The flat are spacious, room are comfortable with Home-Video. The family used it as villa for their children’s holiday for I was told that the family also had business in Australia. The problem is that I cannot look it as my home because I always felt a little bit home-orientated.
After that, we moved from inside to the top of that building. They had barbeque facilities using
electricity. It took some time to iginite, that button seemed not as easy as just push and turn. Anyway, we wait a minute and put butter around, then sausage, pork and beef. During these time, I together with the girl back inside for some fruit.
Looking around, there are many luxuries units alike but not individual house spreading along this area. For the geographical reason, her rent is double that of mine. Sided main street, some restaurants are the most sales features. Among them are from States, Mexico, or Southeast Asia countries. Shopping are another reason attracting those young ladies. As urban area are only one stop ahead of South Yarra taking the cycular train of City Loop. Students who took some part-time job in city would like choose a flat here. For those immigrants, the price of the property symbolized their status distinguishing from others. But my friend only stayed there for about one semester.
The rest of that day, I felt quite happy because of the food and drink. Corn and bread had also been put together, and eat with honey. I still felt regret that no other chance got to try those special dishes offered in that clubs. As one of my friends had ever held a birthday party in one club drinking beers with popcorn. She told me the famous are the ice-cream and the air of western countryside from States.
I had also eat in the restaurants close to my community of Carnegie. That is after winter holiday for an ordinary gathering. We spent a long time to find a suitable restaurant of Korea, and each one order some special dishes. Things like usually, I had to share some fresh fish with others. The dishes I was recommended is that famous “shi guo ban fan” left small piece of assorted fish. It is so hot which made me unhappy again. If plus a drink of beer will be more appetites. That make me miss the tastes left in China when I traveled with previous colleagues.
Food paid by own money will be more comfortable. That feeling got from I took that job of assistant in a Chinese restaurant among St Kilda. It was recommended by the campus advisor. My shift was scheduled at 10:00 in the morning. One hour spent on road, another hour for the preparation in the kitchen. The lunchtime is due between 12 till 1’clock in the afternoon. People in suit around this commercial complex will take the seats outside and along the windows. They are fascinated by the neat and clean of the “sushi”. It only cost au$9 to eat here or take a pack. My job was do as quickly as I can while learning from my boss. They are immigrants from Shanghai. Of curse they are rich enough, the closing time is at 3o’clock in the afternoon. The couple will drive back after the cutoff of registration roll. Left another boy and I do the cleanings. Usually, I got paid at the weekend calculating the total working hours. That is much cheaper than what I got from the office admin. Not long, I was substituted by a girl from an immigrants of Indonesia. Actually, it is quite clear that not the skill but the background had made me redundant from the position. The boss had such a fuzzy wife made him so loyal from his own job regardless of what happened away from the kitchen. Even strange, the oliver oil did not make me omit but let me to think about the feasibility to open my own business.
